Brianna: Learning to express myself

Through Check Your Head’s student-centered approach . . . Brianna was able to find a supportive environment where she could talk to girls her own age about her experiences and the challenges she was facing.

BriannaWhen Brianna, a middle school student, was having some difficulties at her school, she came across a weekly group through Check Your Head, a school-based program offered by Mental Health Colorado. Through Check Your Head’s student-centered approach – which helps young people identify and communicate their mental health needs and explore issues like self-identity and conflict resolution – Brianna was able to find a supportive environment where she could talk to girls her own age about her experiences and the challenges she was facing.

Brianna’s mother, Laura, says that the support Brianna received through Check Your Head has helped her learn several new ways to express her feelings:

“She has learned appropriate ways to express herself through song, dance, poetry, art, and journaling – in addition to talking things through. She has gained a confidence and renewed sense of empowerment through her participation in this program.”

In October 2015, as part of Mental Health Colorado’s annual Tribute gala, Brianna spoke to an audience of several hundred about the positive impact that Check Your Head has had on her life. It was a very proud moment for both Brianna and her mother.
