In this conversation, Sheriff FitzSimons discusses Summit County’s nationally recognized SMART co-responder program, which pairs law enforcement officers with a clinician and case manager when responding to mental health crises. This program has transformed how people receive care, helping stabilize individuals within the community, connecting them with ongoing support, and reducing the need for involuntary mental health holds whenever it is safe to do so.
