Pride Month and Mental Health: Supporting LGBTQ+ Coloradans Across the Lifespan

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, joy, and contributions of LGBTQ+ Coloradans and their communities statewide.

At Mental Health Colorado, Pride is also an opportunity to recognize the powerful connection between belonging and health. Everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and connected. Research shows that visibility, affirmation, and community support are powerful protective factors that improve health outcomes and help people thrive.

While Colorado has made important progress, challenges remain.

According to the Colorado Health Institute, only 42% of LGBTQ+ Coloradans report having good mental health, compared to 74.8% of heterosexual, cisgender Coloradans.

This year’s Pride Month theme at Mental Health Colorado is Belonging Across the Lifespan. The theme reflects our mission of promoting healthier minds across the lifespan for all Coloradans and recognizes that our health is shaped by our relationships, communities, opportunities, and sense of belonging at every stage of life.

Throughout June, we will share information and resources focused on LGBTQ+ mental health, community connection, and the importance of creating affirming environments where people can thrive. We will also highlight how supportive families, trusted adults, inclusive communities, and equitable policies contribute to healthier minds and stronger communities.

This year, Colorado strengthened protections for survivors of conversion therapy, reflecting the important role that policy can play in supporting health, dignity, and belonging. Progress like this helps create communities where LGBTQ+ Coloradans can live authentically and access the support they deserve.
